Almendralejo: Bullfighting with Tradition
If you are a bullfighting enthusiast and you have never visited Almendralejo, the last weekend of March offers you a great opportunity — and the perfect excuse. And if you are also a lover of good wine, happiness is guaranteed. Don’t believe it? Read on…
The promotional poster proudly claims that it is the most beautiful and comfortable bullring in Extremadura. Personal tastes aside, the truth is that the La Piedad bullring in Almendralejo is a building well worth visiting. Its distinctive architecture and rich history make it a place to be proud of having attended a bullfighting event, enjoying the comfort of its stands.
The bullring dates back to 1843 and boasts a truly unique feature worldwide: an active wine cellar located inside the building itself. Beneath the seating areas, within a brick-vaulted cellar, no less than 750,000 litres of wine are stored. This remarkable historical feature led the bullring to be officially recognised as a Site of Cultural Interest in 2014.
It could therefore be said that both the bullring itself and the wines stored within its walls are full of tradition and character. The same applies to the bullfighting posters presented year after year, coinciding with the Wine and Olive Fair, organised by the company Tauroemoción, led by its CEO, Alberto García.
For 2026, two events have been announced, taking place on 28 and 29 March. A bullfight and a mounted bullfighting spectacle promise plenty of excitement, aiming to fill the bullring on this final weekend of March, when spring has already arrived and the mild temperatures invite visitors to explore new towns and bullrings as distinctive as this one in the province of Badajoz.
On Saturday 28 March, the bullfight brings together three highly artistic matadors: Emilio de Justo, Juan Ortega and Pablo Aguado. All three are known for their sensitivity and elegance with the cape and muleta. They will face a bullfight from a prestigious breeding farm: Juan Pedro Domecq. A truly outstanding line-up for lovers of fine bullfighting.
Sunday 29 March is dedicated to fans of mounted bullfighting. This Iberian-style event, reflecting the proximity of the Portuguese border, features Portuguese cavaleiros Moura Caetano, João Telles and Salgueiro da Costa, alongside Spanish rejoneadores Sergio Galán, Leonardo and local rider Adrián Venegas. They will face bulls from the Couto de Fornilhos stud. The forcados of Santarém and São Manços will also take part. A colourful, exciting and, above all, different kind of spectacle.
In short, the organisers have delivered two events of unquestionable appeal, while the city and its bullring provide the perfect setting. All that is missing now is you, dear bullfighting enthusiast, to complete the experience this weekend in the “City of Wine”. Enjoy it.
