From Bugles to Microphones: The Metamorphosis of Badajoz’s Former Bullring

In the historic heart of Badajoz, beside the Baluarte de San Roque, once stood a bullring that for more than a century was the beating taurine heart of the city. Since its inauguration in 1859, it had seen generations of matadors pass through its gates, endless ovations, and moments of solemn silence. It was a gathering place for an afición that made the city’s walls tremble every San Juan Fair.

With the turn of the century, Badajoz chose to look forward without erasing its past. The old bullring, worn by time, was gradually transformed into the Manuel Rojas Conference Centre, inaugurated in 2006. Architects José Selgas and Lucía Cano understood that the goal was not to erase history, but to reinterpret it. Where once the crowd roared for a great faena, today you can hear lectures, concerts, and conferences — proof that the city’s cultural heartbeat remains strong.

Curiously, the bullring’s circular shape never disappeared. The new building preserves that symbolic geometry, a subtle architectural nod to the arena it once was. Its main auditorium even occupies the same space where the stands once rose. And, as if the sun itself were paying tribute, every 14th of August, the sculpture “Eclíptica” casts a radiant flower of light in memory of the events of 1936.

Today, the Manuel Rojas Conference Centre stands not only as one of Extremadura’s cultural landmarks, but also as a masterclass in how to transform without forgetting. The city may have swapped capes for microphones, yet the spirit of the old ring — that perfect circle which once held so much emotion — still pulses beneath every brick. Because Badajoz, even when it reinvents itself, never ceases to be taurine at heart.
